Rebates and Third Party Funding

Medicare Rebates

If you are registered with Medicare, you may be eligible for session rebates (refund from Medicare for part of the treatment fee).

As of 2024, Medicare rebates for psychological services in Australia are structured as follows:

  • Better Access Initiative (Mental Health Care Plan)

  • Eating Disorder Treatment (RDT) Plan

  • Chronic Disease Management (CDM) Plan

  • Pregnancy Support Counselling

Better Access Initiative (Mental Health Care Plan)

  • Rebate: $96.65 per session for General Psychologists.

  • Eligibility: Patients must obtain a referral from a GP, psychiatrist, or pediatrician under a Mental Health Care Plan.

  • Sessions Covered: Up to 10 individual sessions per calendar year.

Eating Disorder Treatment (EDT) Plan

  • Rebates: $96.65 per session for General Psychologists.

  • Eligibility: Patients diagnosed with an eating disorder and referred by a GP under an Eating Disorder Treatment Plan.

  • Sessions Covered: Up to 40 psychological treatment sessions per calendar year.

Chronic Disease Management (CDM) Plan

  • Rebate: Approximately $56 per session.

  • Eligibility: Designed for individuals with a chronic medical condition requiring multidisciplinary care. A referral from a GP is necessary.

  • Sessions Covered: Up to 5 allied health services per calendar year, which can include psychological services.

Pregnancy Support Counselling

  • Rebate: $77.80 per session (approximately).

  • Eligibility: Available for women experiencing distress related to pregnancy or pregnancy-related decisions, with a referral from a GP.

  • Sessions Covered: Up to 3 sessions per pregnancy.

  • Do I need a referral from my doctor?
No, but if you want to claim a Medicare rebate, then you need a doctor's referral and approval for one of Medicare's rebate plans (e.g. a Mental health treatment, eating disorder, chronic disease or pregnancy plan). Only sessions on or after the date of the referral may be eligible for Medicare rebates.
  • Does Medicare pay rebates when the client or Brydan are outside of Australia?
No. Both client and healthcare provider need to be in Australia. Brydan travels overseas regularly for business purposes. If you have an online session while he is overseas, and you are eligible for a Medicare rebate, he will reduce the standard fee by the Medicare rebate so that clients are not disadvantaged. If the client travels overseas, they are unable to claim the Medicare rebate, but the session fee will remain the same. The reduction is only for when Brydan is overseas, and only for Medicare rebates.
  • Does Medicare give rebates for missed or cancelled sessions?
No. Medicare does not provide rebates for late cancellation or no show fees. When these situations occur, the fee type is updated on invoices, and Medicare will reject any claims for these invoices.
  • How much do I pay if I have a Medicare referral from my doctor?
The fee that you pay for a session is the standard session rate. However, if you are eligible for a Medicare rebate, you will receive the rebate back from Medicare in the following days (how soon depends on Medicare). The general rebate amount in 2024-2025 is $96.65.
  • How much can I save with a referral and Medicare rebates?
Under a Mental Health Treatment Plan, Medicare rebates cover up to 10 sessions annually, with a rebate of $96.65 per session, totaling up to $966.50 over the calendar year. Clients eligible for Eating Disorder Treatment Plans can access rebates for up to 40 sessions, amounting to a maximum rebate of $3,866 over the calendar year. Note: Medicare is expected to announce updates for the 2025-26 financial year, so these rates are likely to increase.
  • How Do I Claim My Medicare Rebate?
You do not need to do anything. If you have provided your referral and provided medicare card details and banking details during the intake form process, Brydan will submit your Medicare claims online on your behalf. Please note, that Medicare claims cannot be submitted until payment for session fees has been made.
  • Why do I need to give my bank / credit card details?
Payments for counselling, assessments and reports are processed online through Brydan's client management system, Halaxy. Brydan doesn't accept physical cash nor has a physical EFTPOS machine. Card details are also taken during intake, in case you change your mind and do not attend your first session without providing sufficient cancellation notice (48 hours).
  • Why do FAQs matter?
FAQs are a great way to help site visitors find quick answers to common questions about your business and create a better navigation experience.
  • What is an FAQ section?
An FAQ section can be used to quickly answer common questions about your business like "Where do you ship to?", "What are your opening hours?", or "How can I book a service?".
  • Where can I add my FAQs?
FAQs can be added to any page on your site or to your Wix mobile app, giving access to members on the go.
  • How do I add a new question & answer?
To add a new FAQ follow these steps: 1. Manage FAQs from your site dashboard or in the Editor 2. Add a new question & answer 3. Assign your FAQ to a category 4. Save and publish. You can always come back and edit your FAQs.
  • How do I edit or remove the 'Frequently Asked Questions' title?
You can edit the title from the FAQ 'Settings' tab in the Editor. To remove the title from your mobile app go to the 'Site & App' tab in your Owner's app and customize.
  • Can I insert an image, video, or GIF in my FAQ?
Yes. To add media follow these steps: 1. Manage FAQs from your site dashboard or in the Editor 2. Create a new FAQ or edit an existing one 3. From the answer text box click on the video, image or GIF icon 4. Add media from your library and save.
  • What are your fees?
A standard 50 minute session is currently $240. Please check the Fees and Rebates page for up to date information. The same rate applies to the hourly rate to complete assessments and prepare reports / letters.
  • What are your No Show and Late Cancellation Fees?
Things happen when we forget, change our mind or double book things. Brydan adopts a 'no-shame' approach to these situations, but there are no-show and late cancellation fees. Sometimes people forget. Where a client does not attend an appointment, and does not tell Brydan they won't be attending, this is called a 'No Show'. The No Show fee is 100% of the standard session rate depending on the type of appointment. When a client cancels or changes with less than 48 hours notice from the time of the appointment, there is a Late Cancellation Fee. This is 50% of the session fee. To avoid no-show and late cancellation fees: * Provide 48 hours notice to cancel / change appointments * Put appointment details into your calendar when making appointments (you can also do this from your confirmation email). * Change to a telehealth / online appointment if you can't make it in-person. Brydan's client management system, Halaxy, sends reminder emails and SMS. However, if you don't receive these, it's the client's responsibility to manage their calendar and to check with Brydan when they haven't received these notifications.
  • Can I Change or Cancel my Appointment?
Yes. You can change or cancel your appointment at anytime online through Halaxy.com. However, Brydan requires at least 48 hours notice of a cancellation or change of appointment. Late cancellations / changes (less than 48 hours) will result in a 50% late cancellation / change fee.

National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)

I am currently accepting clients with psychological counselling funding through NDIS.

NDIS

Overview

While I accept NDIS client's its important to ensure we're a good match, so we'll need to have an initial 15 minute consult first before we start working together.

Clients either need to attend online, or be prepared to attend online when I am overseas.

Unfortunately, I do not have wheelchair / accessible access at my office location for in-person treatment.

No out of pocket expenses

NDIS sets a cap to the rate they will pay for psychological fees. This is below my standard rate, however I do not charge clients a fee for the gap between the NDIS Fee Rate Cap and my fees. Therefore, there are no out of pocket expenses, except where you do not attend or cancel within 48 hours and NDIS or the plan manager refuse to pay for relevant fees.

Invoicing

I can invoice NDIS plan managers directly, so clients do not need to make payment or seek reimbursement.

Getting Started

Schedule a 15 minute free online consult. Details of NDIS plans, diagnoses, and a referral from your GP will be required, as well as any other relevant assessment reports for relevant diagnoses.

Third Party Funding

There are several options for third parties to fund psychological services depending on your circumstances. You will need to determine through the relevant sources whether you are eligible. Some sources, I do not accept.

NDIS

I am not registered with NDIS as a provider. However I do accept approved NDIS clients and will invoice plan managers directly.

Victims of Crime

I accept clients with pre-approved victims of crime funding and will invoice respective agencies directly.

National Redress Scheme

I accept clients with pre-approved NRS funding and will invoice NRS directly.

Family Violence Funding

I accept clients with pre-approved third party  family violence funding and will invoice respective agencies directly.

Workers Compensation

I am no-longer accepting clients with Workers Compensation claims.

Transport Accidents

I am no-longer accepting clients with transport accident claims.

Other Funding

There are other third parties that may fund your counselling treatment.

FAQs

Family Violence Funding

Different State and Federal government funding schemes provide access to subsidised or wholly funded family violence counselling, generally through community and not-for-profit organisations.

Overview

Some community services that work with families affected by family violence, can provide funding for brief-time limited counselling.

Claim Process

If you have been approved for family violence counselling, either provide details to Brydan or ask the funding organisation to contact Brydan with invoicing details.

To Get Started

To get stated, schedule a 15 minute online consult and we can discuss any questions that you may have.

Private Health Insurance

Please check with your health insurance provider regarding coverage for psychological treatment. I can provide receipts following treatment, that can be used for seeking reimbursement from your private health insurance provider.

Victims of Crime

I accept clients who have pre-approved Victims of Crime funding.

Initial Treatment / Assessments

Financial assistance for Victims of Crime counselling is generally awarded after an application is approved by the relevant agency. Generally, an applicant can seek a limited number or sessions (e.g. 5) and a psychological assessment, and seek these to be reimbursed by the agency, even if their claim is not approved.

However, sometimes clients change their mind and do not submit a claim to the respective agency, and sometimes the agency doesn't approve the request. Therefore, I only accept VoC clients for initial counselling and assessment if they pay for these initial sessions and assessment themselves, and seek reimbursement directly from the funding agency rather than me invoicing the agency. I understand that this may not be financially viable for some, however, I've needed to introduce this policy due to decisions not to proceed with applications and failure to pay therapy invoices.

You may be eligible for Medicare rebates on these initial sessions, which requires a doctor's referral.

Once funding has been formally approved, I can invoice the victims of crime agencies directly.

No Gap Fee

Victims of Crime agencies set caps to the rate they will pay for psychological fees. These are generally below my standard rate, however I do not charge clients a fee for the gap between the Victims of Crime Fee Rate Cap and my fees.

Once funding is approved, there are no out of pocket expenses for clients, except where you do not attend or cancel within 48 hours and the funder refuses to pay for relevant fees.

Getting Started

While I accept Victims of Crime funded clients, its important to ensure we're a good match, so we'll need to have an initial 15 minute consult first before we start working together.

Clients either need to attend online, or be prepared to attend online when I am overseas.

Unfortunately, I do not have wheelchair / accessible access at my office location for in-person treatment.

Schedule a 15 minute free online consult. A referral from your GP will be required, as well as any other relevant assessment reports for relevant diagnoses, and details of your funding approval.

National Redress Scheme (NRS)

The National Redress Scheme (NRS) provides support, including access to psychological counseling, for survivors of institutional child sexual abuse.

I am registered with the National Redress Scheme as a psychologist.

NRS

Overview

I provide support to clients who have been approved for funded counselling through the National Redress Scheme.

Claim Process

Once a client provides details of their approval, I can invoice the NRS directly, so that clients do not have any out of pocket expenses (unless there is a late cancellation / no show fee and the NRS decides not to fund it).

Trauma Treatment

I work with clients who have experienced different forms of trauma. I adopt a trauma-informed approach and utilise recommended trauma therapies including trauma-informed CBT and EMDR.

To Get Started

To get stated, schedule a 15 minute online consult and we can discuss any questions that you may have.
